Giving Back![]()
The Pointe at Kilpatrick is not only dedicated to the care and well being of everyone who resides in the community within our walls, but for the overall community as well. With the understanding that through support, be it educational, financial or otherwise, we can help build and maintain a strong and healthy community which benefits us all.
The Pointe has always been active in providing free informational seminars for the public, be they held on site or in churches and senior centers in the area. Experts provide helpful information on such topics as Alzheimer’s care, arthritis, con artists, elder law, etc….and are always available to answer questions. In addition to these instructional programs, The Pointe also works year round to create awareness and collect donations to benefit those struggling in our community by contributing to Together We Cope.
Together We Cope (TWC) is a local, non-profit organization that “bridges the gap for Southland residents in temporary crisis by providing food, shelter, clothing and referrals, empowering them to return to self-sufficiency. The Pointe recognizes the importance of the work that TWC performs for our community. Unlike larger charitable organizations, TWC is able to provide personalized assistance to those in the area. One of the really special things they offer is “Birthday Boxes”. Their staff creates these packages for children of all ages. A parent in need can receive a box that is filled with items that allow for a birthday celebration. Among some of the contents that the package contains:
*Cake mix and frosting
*Birthday Candles
*Decorations
*Age/sex appropriate gifts
Though, it may seem like a small gesture, the ability to allow parents the opportunity to create a special birthday for their child is beyond measurable. TWC also collects school supplies and baby products.
In addition to the food/dry goods pantry, TWC also runs a resale shop, with proceeds going to help the same families and individuals. In some cases, utilities and rent are covered by TWC for those who need that help. They report that, “ In 2009-2010, TWC provided assistance to 44,000 people through various programs and distributed more than $1 million in food. More than a thousand youngsters received backpacks and school supplies in the agency’s annual Back-to-School program, and more than a thousand received holiday gifts in the annual Adopt-a-Child effort.”
TWC knows, as does The Pointe, that there are many people who are in need of assistance throughout the year, not just at holidays and special occasions. The Pointe has established itself as a year round drop off location for donations to TWC. Many of our visitors bring donations with them, on a regular basis. Even the majority of our residents, who themselves are on a fixed income, enthusiastically contribute to the large basket found in the lobby.
