Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive

"Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive" The Pointe ay Kilpatrick
On Monday, August 15th, The Pointe took part in the national campaign to “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive”. This initiative was created to pay homage to what many historians call “The Greatest Generation”; those that lived through the depression and later came together as a nation to fight in and eventually win the Second World War. Since the vast majority of our residents lived through both of these historic events, it seemed important to recognize them.

The ceremony began with The Tinley Park VFW marching in to present the flag. Everyone rose to their feet for the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the National Anthem. Several saluted, including Tony Libartore, who remained at attention during the presentation. The unique facet to this campaign is that it not only honors veterans of the time, but everyone who did their part “back home”, working in factories to make military needed materials, as well as sacrificing some of the basics they had grown accustomed to. Several residents who served were presented certificates and pins.

They were also given the opportunity to express what the experience meant to them. Several branches of services were represented including residents who had been enlisted in the Army, Air Force and even the Seabees. The nation really pulled together during that time, and patriotism was at an all time high. This initiative hopes to recapture that spirit and urge a new generation to come together as one.

Catherine Walker Turns 101

"Catherine Walker turns 101" "The Pointe at Kilpatrick"

The Pointe at Kilpatrick celebrated a very special birthday. Long-time resident, Catherine Walker, turned 101 years old. For her birthday last year, a huge party was held for her at The Pointe, with many friends in attendance, including city officials from Cook County.

This year however, Catherine wanted something different. When asked how she would like to spend her birthday, she said she wanted a trip to a casino for her and her friends. Program Director, Angie Garbaczewski and Life Enrichment Coordinator, Joyce Rinkevicius, immediately started planning and made all of the arrangements. When the day came, Catherine, dressed in her favorite color, purple, and her friends, all gathered in the lobby, excited for the day ahead. Angie escorted everyone onto The Pointe bus and drove out to Harrah’s Casino in Aurora, IL. She also arranged for a nice lunch at one of the restaurants in the casino for Catherine and friends.

After a full day, they all returned to find a beautiful cake, with matching cupcakes, decorated in purple. Friends, residents and staff all sang Happy Birthday. Catherine became overwhelmed with emotion as each of the guests came up to offer greetings and best wishes.

HAPPY 101st BIRTHDAY CATHERINE!!
