National Senior Health & Fitness Day

Wednesday, May 25th was “National Senior Fitness Day and The Pointe went all out to honor the occasion. If you are familiar with The Pointe, you already know that we have an extensive and varied catalog of fitness activities and therapies; both for the body and the brain. Program Director, Angie Garbaczewski, incorporated many of these activities into the day-long event and even the staff got involved. John Hartman is one of our newest residents at The Pointe. From nearby Palos Heights, John has lived in the area most of his life. With strong Irish roots, his grandfather came from Ireland, John attended Mt. Carmel High School. Being a wrestler, Mt. Carmel was the only Catholic high school in the area that had a wrestling team. John remembers taking the yellow trolley cars the 20 plus blocks each way, back and forth to school. After high school, John joined the Navy and spent 4 years training squadron pilots and readying planes before flights. He was stationed in Corpus Christi and Hawaii. Derrick Cogwell is Maintenance Assistant at The Pointe at Kilpatrick and has been working here for nearly 4 years. Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, Derrick says “I’ve always loved working on things and fixing them.” A true “Jack of all trades”, his multitude of talents ranges from home maintentance to auto mechanics. Living Well with Diabetes Seminar

Diabetes Seminar

As part of our ongoing educational series, The Pointe held an informative seminar, “Living Well with Diabetes” for the residents and their families. Presented by Kristin Delleman, Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator, Advocate South Suburban Hospital, the program outlined healthy eating plans, including portion control, calorie awareness, exercise and even snacking. The 2 hour seminar ended with FREE glucose monitoring for all and a FREE raffle. Many of those in attendance commented on the helpful information and intended to use the tips provided.

Mary Burke Turns 106!

The Pointe at Kilpatrick recenty held a very special birthday party for Mary Burke, who turned 106 years old!!! Mary moved into The Pointe in the summer of 2005, where she lived until moving next door to Crestwood Care Centre last July. Sporting a pink birthday tiara, Mary was welcomed by many old friends at The Pointe and joined by new ones from Crestwood. She truly was “Queen for a Day” and loved the party. Perhaps, the most poignant moment was when Catherine Walker made her way to Mary’s side. Catherine, who is one of the first residents to move into The Pointe, celebrated her 100th birthday not long ago. The grandeur of the moment wasn’t lost on anyone, as these two centurians chatted and laughed together. Though Mary is missed at The Pointe, she is close by and receives visits from friends and staff members. Quick with a smile, Mary is always able to brighten anyone’s day. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY!!

Join us for our 2nd Annual Classic Car Show!! There will also be “Hot Wheels” races for the kids, an outdoor BBQ and live music and entertainment. Everyone will get to vote on their favorite car and awards will presented at the end of the day.

(For residents and their families.)
Dr. Cory Conniff, MD will provide valuable information and helpful tips for the arthritis sufferer. Some of the areas he will cover include:
*joint and arthritis pain
*controlling pain
*attention to activities
*eating a well-balanced diet
*exercise

CNA training

“CNA Workshop
The Resident Services department, led by Vicie Johnson, RN held a CNA workshop on May 27th. The afternoon of training highlighted 3 topics: Communication, Teamwork and Understanding Policies. The 3 segments were led by two of our nurses, Danika Harris and J’nice James as well as our Executive Director, Zoe Espitia. The training was very interactive and included a game of Jeopardy, role playing, and spin the wheel trivia. Nancy McCaffrey, Corporate Director, stated “It was a nice departure from the lecture training we typically conduct. The staff was much more engaged and had fun while learning. I was impressed by the effort of the management team.” Zoe Espitia has future sessions already planned.
