Family Day and 2nd Annual Classic Car Show

The Pointe at Kilpatrick kicked off the Father’s Day weekend by hosting a Family Day celebration for the residents and their families on Saturday, June 18th. For the second straight year, the highlight was the Classic Car Show and entertainment by Diane Noe. The beautiful day, though warm, proved to be the perfect back drop for the 18 cars on display. Many of the residents and their families were waiting outside as the cars arrived; a chorus of “ohhs” and “ahhs” as each drove into the parking lot.

Each car received a placard with a number, to display on their car for voting purposes. Throughout the day, guests and staff looked over the cars and voted for their favorite. The proud owners answered questions about their cars and posed for photographs. Many of the residents were excited to see makes and models of cars they used to own. Several of the car owners even brought a large, professional sound system that they set up and played classic songs from the 50’s throughout the day.  Organized by Program Director, Angie Garbaczewski, the day was filled with entertainment and fun for everyone. Angie’s husband, Jim, an avid collector of Hot Wheels, set up a race track for the miniature models of cars. Children lined up all afternoon to choose a car and race it against others. Jim was more than generous to also bring in brand new cars, still in the packages, that the winners of the races could choose from. By the end of the day, every child had won a race and received a car. With a large tent set up outside, their was room for everyone to enjoy the sunny, summer morning/afternoon and stay cool. There was also an old fashioned popcorn cart was set up nearby, with children and adults alike gathered around. A traditional picnic lunch was served inside, though many people brought their meals back outside, under the tent. The dietary staff prepared the summer favorites:

  • Hamburgers
  • Hotdogs
  • Macaroni Salad
  • Corn-on-the-cob
  • Chips
  • Watermelon

Afterward, they passed out fudgecicles and popsicles to everyone.  Once lunch was over, Diane Noe, a favorite entertainer at The Pointe, put on a great show outside. Her energy and excitement are contagious and she really got the crowd involved. Keeping in theme with the day, Diane sang many 50’s & 60’s classics, opening with Route 66. She danced with several of the residents and never missed a beat as she sang. One of the residents, Tony Libatore, danced to 3 songs with her. The crowd really enjoyed Tony and Diane doing a chorus line kick while both sang New York, New York. Diane ended her program with a tribute to Angie and sang her favorite song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

After Diane’s performance, Angie ended the day by announcing the winner for favorite car, along with second and third places. She also had Diane draw the winning raffle ticket. Throughout the day, raffle tickets were sold to raise money for the Activities Department. The money is used to take residents on outings and field trips. The prize was a beautiful gift basket made up by Joyce Rinkevicius, Life Enrichment Coordinator for our New Day program.

With something for everyone and beautiful weather, the day was fun for all who attended. The Pointe would like to thank the staff, who worked so hard to ensure a successful event as well as Diane Noe and the car owners, many from the Lemont Car Club. A special thanks goes out to Angie, who, day in and day out, provides excitement and maintains such a high quality of life at The Pointe.
