“Be kinder than necessary, because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” This is the mantra of Rita Ball, the Business Office Manager (B.O.M.) at The Pointe. Born and raised in Chicago, Rita is the “baby” of her family, being the youngest of 3 children, all girls. After high school, Rita continued her education at Chicago State University, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Upon graduation, Rita accepted an offer at a local bank. Over the next 16 years, Rita worked in banking, but started to feel like she needed a change. A friend suggested she interview for the position of B.O.M. at The Pointe at Kilpatrick. Rita admits, like most people, she had never really heard of supportive living and wasn’t sure what it entailed. However, after walking through the doors for her first interview, she knew she found an environment she wanted to work in. Rita says, “I got such a good feeling from the people interviewing me. They were professional and it was obvious they all cared for the residents and staff alike. You know if the management feels that way, then it spreads through the entire staff. It felt right.” Rita was not disappointed. As B.O.M., Rita works with residents, their families, staff, vendors and the state. “Because we work with public aid, the system can be confusing and intimidating. I really enjoy helping the residents and their families navigate through the process.” Rita also appreciates her coworkers and the team-like atmosphere among the staff. From a close knit family herself, she feels everyone is family here. For her it is more true than most. When it came time for her uncle to move to a supportive living community, Rita and her family knew immediately where that would be. “My family was already familiar with the place and had been here before for events. It was a natural decision.” Rita hopes to work at The Pointe for many more years to come. With heart felt dedication, her never ending smile and her contagious laughter, we hope she does as well.
