Drama Therapy at The Pointe
  Dated : 02.07.2010

The Pointe held it's first Drama Therapy Class on Friday, July 2.  The group is directed by Whitney Davis.  Ms. Davis received her B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Columbia College in Chicago and then obtained her Master's Degree in Social Work from Indiana University in 2009. She specializes in using improvisation to increase spontaneity, creativity and emotional expression.
With 15 residents in attendance, the group participated in several activities, including "Freeze Scene".  In this particular exercise, the group improvised a scene.  During the performance, another reisdent would say "freeze," halting the scene.  The caller would then tap another resident on the shoulder and physically take their place in the scene, but changing the dialogue into somrething completely different.  The residents really enjoyed this routine and caught on quickly to the ever changing format.
Another exercise was to imagine an object, in this case a scarf, to be anything they wanted it to be.  One resident imagined it was the dress she was wearing when she met her husband, another thought of a fishing pole and cast the scarf into the middle of the room and one woman imagined the scarf to be her siblings and wrapped herself up with it and said "...it feels like family".
All of the residents who attended enjoyed the exercises and expressed a desire to particiapte in the next session. The Pointe would like to thank Whitney for a wonderful experience and is looking forward to her next visit.
