The Pointe at Kilpatrick - Crestwood, IL
Bell Choir
In May of 2011, Life Enrichment Coordinator, Joyce Rinkevicius, held an “Umbrella-Art Auction”, selling hand decorated umbrellas created by residents living in the New Day neighborhood at The Pointe. These residents are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. The Pointe utilizes various therapies in their Creative Arts Program. Rinkevicius came up with the idea to hold a silent auction and sell the umbrellas. The money raised would go toward the New Day field trips, projects, and entertainment. The auction was held and was a huge success, drawing in family, friends and local neighbors of the community. Surpassing her expectations, Rinkevicius was excited that she could purchase a set of hand bells as part of music therapy for the New Day programs. The bells are brightly colored to indicate the notes they play and are designed to be used in a bell choir. The New Day Bell Choir was formed. The residents have enjoyed playing them as part of their music therapy and Rinkevicius has lead through several songs, including different Christmas carols. However, their big moment to shine came recently, when The Pointe held a residents talent show, “The Pointe’s Got Talent”. Organized by the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition, supportive living communities throughout Illinois were encouraged to hosts talents shows and submit their own winner’s videos for a final on-line competition. The New Day Bell Choir was first on the agenda and wowed the crowd with a rendition of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”, which got the whole crowd singing along. They did an amazing job and we are sure we will be hearing more from them in the future.
