The Pointe at Kilpatrick offers a wide variety of activities and therapies, designed not only for the enjoyment of our residents, but also to better the quality of their lives. Whether it be a creative arts class, hand massages, yoga therapy….the goal is to maintain and/or strengthen their body, mind and spirit. The Pointe is especially focused on brain health and fitness. This not only includes dementia/Alzheimer’s care, but also the prevention of memory loss and cognitive decline that accompanies old age in general. One of the unique ways in which The Pointe tackles this is by using the Dakim BrainFitness system.

Dakim BrainFitness is a computer based, interactive program created by Dan Michel, who had struggled with his father’s Alzheimer’s for 13 years. He was intent on designing a program that was preventive to memory loss and would help strengthen cognitive ability. This in turn, would slow the onset of dementia/Alzheimer’s for those predicated, as well as general memory loss due to aging. The program is comprised of several mental exercises that “work” the brain, keeping it active. Like any part of the body, the “use it, or lose it” theory also applies to the brain , which needs to be stimulated to stay strong and function at a high level. As with any exercise program, it also has to be enjoyable for the user in order to keep them coming back:

“Dakim BrainFitness is designed to provide a fun, comprehensive brain workout in just 20 minutes a day. Crossword puzzles and sudoku only exercise one part of the brain, but Dakim cross-trains six essential cognitive domains with over 100 different exercise formats across multiple levels of challenge. Altogether, it includes more than 300 hours of vivid graphics, music, humor, movie clips, stories, and trivia to keep the program interesting, engaging, and, most of all, fun.” – www.dakim.com

It has long been realized that physical exercise is essential to maintaining a strong, healthy body, which in turns, helps ward off disease and injury. Likewise for the brain. As more and more studies are showing, brain health is just as important to determining the quality of life one leads, especially as we grow older. The Pointe is dedicated to not only preserving the memories of the past, but also forging ahead, making new ones.
