Drama Therapy: Rainbows and Poems
Whitney Davis, Drama Therapist, made her monthly visit to The Pointe on Friday, March 11th. As part of our ongoing, Expressive Arts Program, Whitney leads each session with a strong focus on interaction, expression and creativity.
Working with our New Day residents, those living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, Whitney guided them in a collective effort of writing a poem. She gave them a single statement to work from, “The Best things in the world…”; from there the residents inserted their thoughts and feelings. This is the poem they wrote together:
The Best Things in the World
The best things in the world
Are your health and your wealth
The best things in the world
Is your ability to have mind over matter
The best things in the world
Is love
The best things in the world
Is to help yourself
The best things in the world
Is to thank God for people like you
After completing their poem, the residents took turns reading poems from
famous authors. This was followed by an improvisation, in which the residents used/wore colorful scarves to tell stories and create images. By the end of the session, the reisdents had placed their scarves together, creating a rainbow on the floor.
When the session was over, the residents expressed how much they enjoyed the hour and eagerly asked her when she would be returning. Whitney assured them that she would be back next month with more fun and creative avenues to explore.
